About Crighton Estate

Crighton Estate is a 100% family owned and operated vineyard, from the vine to the bottle. Bradley Crighton alongside his wife Nadia and two young children live and breathe the grapes, residing on the home block where Barking Hedge grows. Being the vineyard manager, Bradley overseas the general running of the block and ensures the grapes are being nurtured and loved.

The house overlooks the spectacular Wairau River, that is known for its great trout and salmon fishing. The Wairau River is Marlborough’s largest river with Maori aptly naming the river ‘many waters’. The Wairau rises in the Spencer mountains and runs from the South to the North before turning to follow a part of the alpine fault line filled by glacial outwash.

The home block consists of approximately 20 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and a variety of Pinot Noir clones. Existing vines of Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc have been complimented with recent plantings of Riesling and additional Sauvignon Blanc. Anticipated first harvest of the new plantings is expected this year, 2010.

The home block is a single vineyard, and boasts the delicious wine; Barking Hedge. The name was derived from the family’s late Dobermann; Jazmine. Her favourite past-time was chasing and barking at hedgehogs, which roam the block during dusk. When the time came to name the label the family was enjoying their first tank sample of Sauvignon Blanc. Jazmine, however, was busy barking up a storm at her little spiky friend who was foraging for food. Thus, Barking Hedge was born.
